Once the laser light is applied to the skin, it enters the vein, where the energy from the laser is absorbed and the vein walls collapse and seal shut, eliminating the vein’s appearance on the skin in a quick & effective manner.

This comfortable procedure can eliminate blood vessels by precise tissue heating and does not alter the surrounding skin. Generally, the vessels treated collapse during the session, but there can be some post-treatment redness and swelling.

Following post treatment care instructions is essential for optimal outcomes. Discomfort is minimal and is usually compared to the “snap of a rubber band.”

Multiple treatments may be required to achieve your desired result, especially on the legs.

An IPL treatment uses the power of broadband light to deliver pulses of intense light to penetrate the layers of the skin. Most patients describe their IPL Photofacial experiencing a fast, pinching sensation during treatment, with minimal discomfort. There is no need for injections or incisions, giving patients the bonus of no downtime required. Average treatment takes approximately 30-45 minutes.

- What to expect?

• Your skin may be temperature sensitive for several days after treatment. Brown spots and freckles will appear

darker while healing.

• It should take 4-6 weeks to see the full result and 2-3 treatments may be required to achieve an optimum

result.

• The sessions are designed to provide no downtime however, occasionally you may find that your cheeks

and under eye areas are slightly puffy after treatment. You may use cold compresses (5 minutes on and 10

minutes off) several times an hour to help ease both redness and swelling.

• Sleeping with your head elevated for the first night will also help decrease any swelling you may experience.

• Redness around the treated area for a few hours to days.

• Freckles and age spots may darken for three to seven days before starting to fade.

• Skin flaking for up to 10 days.

• Minor bruising that may last two weeks or less.

- Will I need to take time off? -

The short answer is no. Healing after an IPL treatment varies with the patient although in most cases takes less than a week and as little as a few hours to days. Immediately after the treatment you may notice some minor redness and swelling, similar to that of a sunburn. Ice packs or a cool washcloth can be used as needed. If treating freckles and other dark spots, you may experience dryness and flaking of the treated area. Some of the spots may appear darker, but they should slough off within a few days. You can apply makeup immediately after an IPL treatment if desired. Avoid heavy exertion and activities which may cause flushing of the skin for three days after treatment.

Unlike lasers, an IPL device sends out more than one wavelength of pulsating light. With providers choosing a mix of filters, it can treat a range of skin conditions at the same time. After IPL, you may have a younger because your skin tone is more even. While laser therapy uses a set wavelength depending on the procedure, intense pulsed light therapy uses multiple different wavelengths of light released in pulses. Erbium:YAG uses a 2940nm wavelength for skin resurfacing. Because water is such a critical component in the epidermal and dermal tissue, the 2940 nm wavelength produced by Erbium:YAG lasers is capable of rapidly vaporizing water residing in the skin. This unique wavelength delivers an almost instant skin ablation while limiting heat damage in the surrounding area. Unlike CO2, Erbium is a more superficial skin resurfacing tool for polishing the skin. The Erbium:YAG laser is capable of achieving superior resurfacing results, while offering many advantages to the patient, e.g., reduced anesthetic requirements, shorter healing time, reduced erythema, less risk of pigmentary change, and more flexibility for facial skin resurfacing.

Unlike a CO2 laser, an erbium laser is a gentler approach to the skin, hence why it is named the “micro laser

peel.” The erbium laser is usually more of a superficial treatment than a CO2 laser and will help treat fine lines,

some hyperpigmentation, and mild scarring.

Ablative and non-ablative Erbium laser resurfacing stimulate collagen reorganization and fibroblast activation

in photoaged skin. Ablative resurfacing, as on the Spectrum laser, will yield more significant results in a shorter period of time.

For our Erbium Laser Resurfacing treatment at Bloom Medical Aesthetics, topical numbing cream is typically used to help mitigate any discomfort. Mild erythema (redness) can last a few hours up to a few days depending on the severity of the treatment. Mild sunburn sensation that may include some mild discomfort may persist for up to 24-48 hours. Patients may use ice to sooth areas of discomfort. A few days after mild peeling of the skin will begin, do not pick.

Recovery times will vary depending on your treatment. Skin should start sloughing off 2-3 days after the

treatment, a rosy “glow” can remain for several weeks. Make-up may be applied to minimize redness. Generally, 2-3 days off should be sufficient, 3-5 days for more aggressive treatments.

Mild complications of Erbium:YAG laser resurfacing include milia, acne exacerbation, contact dermatitis,

or perioral dermatitis. Moderate complications include prolonged erythema, transient posttreatment

hyperpigmentation, and delayed hypopigmentation.

Patients with realistic expectations and mild to moderate skin conditions. If you have fine lines or wrinkles

around your eyes or mouth or on your forehead, shallow scars from acne, or non-responsive skin after a facelift, then you may be a good candidate for Erbium Laser Resurfacing. Cannot be performed on tanned skin, please stay out of the sun. Avoid direct exposure to the sun / tanning beds 4 weeks prior to treatment. Wear broad spectrum SPF, pretreat if prone to cold sores.
